What a resting ECG records
An electrocardiogram records the heart's electrical activity, including rate and rhythm. During a resting 12 lead ECG, small sticky electrodes are placed on the chest and limbs. The test is usually quick and painless.
What 24 hour ABPM records
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring uses a cuff connected to a portable monitor. It takes repeated readings during normal daytime activity and sleep. This provides a broader picture than one clinic reading. NICE recommends ABPM to confirm hypertension in defined circumstances after raised clinic measurements.
Why one cannot replace the other
An ECG does not measure blood pressure, and ABPM does not record the heart's electrical tracing. The appropriate service depends on the reason for testing and any request from your GP, prescriber or another clinician.
Results and next steps
Orchis IV provides the agreed measurement, report pathway and factual explanation. A clinician responsible for your care should assess symptoms, make a diagnosis and decide on treatment or medicine changes.
