Check whether you need special preparation
Many blood tests need no special preparation. Some require fasting or need to be taken at a particular time. Follow the instructions supplied by Orchis IV, your requesting clinician or your test provider. If you are arranging a home visit, see our mobile blood tests at home page. If the instructions are unclear, ask before the appointment rather than guessing.
Do not change medicines without advice
Tell the requesting service about medicines, vitamins and supplements when asked. Do not stop, delay or change prescribed medicine unless the clinician responsible for your care has told you to do so.
Hydration and practical preparation
- Drink water normally unless you have been given a fluid restriction or different instructions.
- Wear clothing that allows easy access above the elbow.
- Have your identification, request form, labels and third party kit ready.
- Tell the nurse about allergies, previous fainting, difficult collections, anticoagulants or another concern relevant to the procedure.

What happens afterwards
A small bruise can occur after a blood test. Apply firm pressure as directed and follow the aftercare advice you receive. The route and timing of results depend on the service or provider.
