Before the needle
The nurse confirms your identity, the requested tests, relevant preparation and your consent. You can ask questions and withdraw consent before or during the procedure. During collection
A tourniquet is placed around the arm, the skin is cleaned and a sterile needle is used to collect the required tubes. Blood collection usually takes only a few minutes, although the whole visit includes checks, paperwork and safe preparation of the samples.
Labelling and the laboratory pathway
Samples are labelled and checked against the request. For an Orchis IV laboratory package, Orchis IV prepares and dispatches the samples to the laboratory. A third party kit follows that provider's return instructions. For a GP, consultant or clinic request, the receiving and transport arrangements must be confirmed.
After the collection
Pressure and a dressing are applied. Follow the advice given, especially if you bruise easily or take anticoagulant medicine. Results do not come from the act of collection itself; they follow the pathway of the laboratory, kit provider or requesting clinician.
